The looming confrontation of ‘who was here first’ increases my heart rate and my verbal missives coming rapidly to mind. The deli counter was eye level with me and beyond it, the man his apron stained by mustard, busied himself cutting corned beef and pastrami for the woman in front of me. I edged closer to the counter, my walk challenging. Back in the saddle.
