Sunday Nights

Last Sunday we all headed to the village for a Goodbye Dinner one of the villagers threw for Nate and Zach. It was in a word, delicious. While we all sat around the mats, eating shrimps the size of our hands and delicious curries with the World Cup Game in the background, Law confided in Rachel she had always wanted to learn English. “So many faraungs will come here and I want to be able to talk to them” she said with a wistful look on her face.  Rachel and I both encouraged her to come attend classes on Saturdays but she can’t as she works. Pulling out a Thai to English Dictionary she told us she was a ‘laborer” who works long hours for $3 a day.  “I go to work, I come home and cook and then I sleep. Those are my days.”  Law told us how she only went to school up the 6th grade as both her parents passed away then.

Since the yearning on her face was so apparent and I have more than enough time on my hands to teach an adult English class, Rachel and I talked with her until we found a way to make a class for her possible. We decided I will go to her house on Sunday nights at 7p and teach English for an hour! She told us she will let her friends know I will be teaching then and to attend. Rachel turned to me with a laugh and said “Since she is the boss lady around here, you better be ready for a full house.”  I can’t wait.
